Lake Powell to Zion Nat’l Park 7-26-11

Stopped at Glen Canyon/Lake Powell on our way from Page, AZ to Zion Nation Park, UT. The Glen Canyon Dam, holding back the Colorado River north of the Grand Canyon, flooded Glen Canyon to create Lake Powell.  The bizarre red-cliffs-to-blue-water was the opening scene from Planet of the Apes, where Charlton Heston’s spaceship crashes. Still unnatural looking.

Then on to Zion. Stopped before the mile-long tunnel (built 1927- 30) through a sandstone cliff to climb the Canyon Overlook trail for our firt view of the mountains that form Zion Canyon. Rainy, but awe-inspiring.

Followed with a ride on the park shuttle up to the Zion Lodge where we crossed the Virgin river (which cut the canyon) to climb the Emerald Pools Trail. Stayed in Springdale, ate at Flying Monkey Grill.
