Zion Day2 – 7/27/11

Hiked up to Weeping Rock, a sandstone overhang with hanging gardens of moss and other plants, where rain and snowmelt seep in from above, then “weep” out. Cool and damp. From there, we stopped at Big Bend – no formal trails, but great open access to the Virgin River, and no crowds.

Then we hiked the Riverside Trail, and made one river crossing – very rocky, strong current, ankle-to-knee-deep. Chickened out when we saw that the 2nd crossing could be waist-deep (had to protect the camera). Folks who crossed in bathing suits and didn’t care about getting wet swam to The Narrows. Sad to miss out on this slot canyon, but what we saw was great.

Followed with a soak in the pool and jacuzzi at hotel, then back to Zion for picnic dinner along the river by The Grotto trail. Had to use cellphone flashlight to find the trail back. Countless stars, including the Milky Way.
