Did you know there’s a Little Blue Hill in the Blue Hills Reservation? Trailhead is at the back end of the carpool parking lot on Route 138 just past the 128 intersection. There are also notices posted about this being a public area and that indecent exposure/lewdness is punishable by law. Hmmm… cruising/trysting spot? The only other hikers we saw were a father with his 2 little whining daughters and 3 solo male hikers.
Anyway, it’s a nice short but steep hike up to a few exposed rocky overlooks with views of woods or across the road to the summit of Great Blue Hill. On this 10th anniversary of 9/11, it seemed (through binoculars) that the US flag atop the GBH Observatory flew at half-mast. Skyline Trail which follows the ridge through the entire Blue Hills Reservation traverses this section, too. There’s a stone bench at an overlook in memory of Augustus Hemenway (1853-1931) “He loved these woods.”
- mushroom season
- fungus? on a stick
