Augusta, ME to Portsmouth, NH – Saturday, Sunday 7/15/12

Took a quick walking tour of downtown Augusta – state house, waterfront along the Kennebec River, historic markers, settlement, fire. We’re noticing a theme – most old cities have burned down once or twice. Two hour drive  to Porstmouth NH for an overnight visit with Anne & Tim in their beautiful new condo. One-floor living! Elevator! Walk to lots of restaurants and ice cream! Music fest across the street at Prescott Park, headlined by Slaid Cleaves accompanied by Duke Levine; also Irish music with the Makem & Spain brothers; and a fiddle group led by Hanneke Cassel. Got a nice walking tour of Portsmouth, with homes dating to the 1600s, port, and an abandoned prison on the Navy base on the Maine side of Portsmouth. Great spot for a resort. Or a horror movie.

Sunday we took a driving tour of Portsmouth, and on to Newcastle to see Wentworth By the Sea. Then back in the car, to home, laundry, and restocking the fridge.
