Winslow, AZ to Walnut Creek Canyon

Spent the night in Winslow, AZ. There’s actually a Standin’ On the Corner Park. Plus the La Posado Hotel, an elegant yet quirky Harvey Girls hotel, where the Santa Fe RailRoad stopped right outside the back lawn. It was designed by architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, and build in 1929. When folks started traveling by car and plane, instead of railroads, the hotel closed in 1957, was turned into offices, then closed again until it was saved from demolition by the current owners who have been restoring it.

After touring La Posada, we headed to a different dwelling – the Sinaguan cliff dwellings in Walnut Creek Canyon National Monument.  Amazing structures – well, what remains of them after “souvenier hunters” were banned and preservationists prevailed.
