Seattle – EMP Music and SciFi museum – 4th of July, ’13

Fourth of July! We begin with a walk to the park and fountain at the Seattle Center – it’s a cloudy day for a change. Kids are running around the fountain, there’s an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in a circle on the lawn. And a long line of people of all ages, all ethnicities, many in fancy suits and dresses, others in traditional garb. We later learned they waiting in line for their places at an INS Naturalization Ceremony, waiting to be sworn in as Americans. Happy Citizenship day!

And then… EMP – the Experience Music Project & Sci-Fi Museum, founded by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, designed by architect Frank Gehry, and full of Nirvana, Hendrix, and Women Who Rock! Even Gaga’s meat-dress. Ick. And sci-fi, fantasy, horror. Oh, yeah, that Iron Throne thingy.

We then headed down to the Olympic Sculpture Park, with a walkway over the highway/railroad, with contemporary sculpture, down to the beach.

Sushi for dinner (I like mine cooked, i.e. tempura), then a sunset drive to Discovery Park and the lighthouse. Can we see fireworks from there? Only little illegal, local ones. Keep driving, and find a crowd on Fremont Bridge, looking towards Gasworks Park where the big fireworks are planned. Pay $3 to park at a funeral home, then stand on the bridge and watch the show. Great sight, with the Aurora Bridge lit up, and we won’t have to deal with the crowds at the Park. We did, of course, take a shortcut that got us caught in the Park traffic. But people were cheering and celebrating in their cars. Fun.
