Fall River, February 2014

Music! History! Food! Pool! Hike! Packed a lot into a 24-hour getaway to Fall River, MA.

Looks like Fall River has its own nuclear reactor.

Started at the Lizzie Borden House – you know, “Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother 40 wacks…” Well, it was her step-mother, and Lizzie was acquitted in the “trial of the century.” Murders never solved, but lots of speculation. Great tour guide, with lots of anecdotes. The house is now a bed & breakfast – complete with reports and photos of paranormal activity. They even host weddings – especially Goth-themed!

Checked in at the Hampton Inn-Westport/Fall River. Nice stay, with indoor pool, jacuzzi, fitness room, free hot breakfast buffet, coffee & tea all day/night, very comfy, with a water view. Dinner at Cinderella Restaurant.

Then off to The Narrows Center for the Performing Arts to see Lake Street Dive –  we learned about them from the concert for the Coen Brothers movie Inside Llewyn Davis. Looked them up after they blew us away, and they’re local- New England Conservatory group! Bought our tickets for the Narrows show. They appeared on the Colbert Report last week – and now their shows are selling out. Is it the Coen Brothers Bump or the Colbert Bump? Or talent just gets found? Jazzy, bluesy, amazing vocals, on touching, poignant, or funny lyrics.  Opening act, Miss Tess and the Talkbalks – Tennessee twangy.

Sunday morning – Horseneck Beach. Couldn’t get to the dunes I remember from childhood (or the biting greenheads), but hiked along the edge of the Reservation. Water, sand, snow, shells, ice, and uncurbed, unleashed dogs chasing sandpipers.

We gotta get out more!
