Pope John Paul II Park – June 2014

Took Mom to Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester, that stretch of greenery between the Expressway and the Neponset River. It used to be the site of the Neponset Drive-In Theater, and a landfill. Now it’s a grassy knoll with joggers, families riding bikes. There’s also a playground and ball-field at the far northern edge, but we couldn’t see how to get there (other than a loooong, unshaded walk) from where we parked.  There are just a few young trees, and pavilions at the higher spots for shade. Nice views of the river, and folks fishing across the way, with cooling breezes on a hot, hot day in the shade of a pavilion. Pretty sure Frederick Law Olmstead would have designed this park differently.
