Madrid Sunday – late day 12/6/14

Visited the Sorolla Museum, mid-Madrid mansion of the Impressionist artist Joaquin Sorolla. Beautiful works, especially of people and children at the beach. Lovely gardens, ceramics, and a custom-designed studio bathed in natural light.

Stopped for cafe con leche with cheesecake in a sidewalk cafe. It may be December, but folks are dining al fresco here. Then traveled to a little house museum free on the Madrid card – and it was closed. But we got to see another neighborhood – with a beautifully designed pink building, right across the street from the ugly cinder-block US Embassy.

Tapas dinner at Toni’s, recommended by our travel-guide Rick Steves – eggplant were delicious. Then back to Plaza Mayor to see it lit up at night.
