Lichen Loop Trail, Boulder County, CO

We hiked the lovely 1.3 mile Lichen Loop Trail at Heil Valley Ranch up off Lefthand Canyon Drive, north of Boulder, on 10/11/2020. On 10/17/2020, the CalWood wildfire burned through the area, taking out 5,000 acres in just 5 hours, and 10,000 acres total by the time it was stopped. Most of the area is still closed, due to hazardous conditions 3 months later. Easy trail, with mountain views, prickly pear cactus, and lots of deer. Brainard Lake, Ward, CO 10/8/20

Got up onto the Peak To Peak Scenic Byway, on Left Hand Canyon Drive up to Ward – then on to Brainard Lake. Took the Niwot Trail to Long Lake… Only 0.7 miles, but between the altitude and the uphill, it was all huffing and puffing, but beautiful woods. Past peak foliage season for the aspens, but still lovely. In the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Headed back down to Brainard Lake – funny, the trail down was much shorter and easier than on the way up!
